About Us
Rooted in care, connection & community
Bophelo is a non-profit, public benefit corporation founded in 2003 as the social development arm of Indlu Living. Our mission is to transform South Africa’s township economies by repairing broken development frameworks and enabling inclusive, sustainable growth.
South Africa faces a housing backlog of 2.3 million units, with over 35% of rentals occurring informally—largely unregulated, unsafe, and unsupported by formal financing. Townships, home to nearly a quarter of the national population, represent one of the country’s most significant opportunities for inclusive urban development.
Bophelo bridges the gap between communities, landowners, and private sector stakeholders. We provide early-stage support—such as title deed acquisition, rezoning, compliance, and site preparation—while also driving community engagement, skills development, and the incubation of township-based micro-developers. This approach reduces barriers to entry, unlocks access to capital, and ensures developments are safe, compliant, and financially viable.
Our integrated model delivers measurable outcomes: increased incomes for landowners, sustainable housing creation, job growth, and improved access to services. By aligning community needs with private sector participation, Bophelo turns township development into a scalable, investable pathway for both social impact and long-term economic returns.

Upgraded infrastructure enables safe, compliant multi-unit housing with stronger public health and environmental safeguards.
X Local SMEs Formalised
Contractors now operate as registered businesses with labour compliance, safety certification, and access to new opportunities.
Our Mission
Bophelo aims to transform the socio-economic landscape of South African townships by embedding large-scale development initiatives within the fabric of local communities. Our mission is to ensure that these projects extend beyond physical infrastructure to generate lasting social and economic value. We work to strengthen the relationship between stakeholders and communities, promoting inclusive, sustainable growth that is rooted in local empowerment and long-term impact.
